6 Easy Tips to A Better Blog
I’ve heard from some really cool bloggers that readers like checklists. (I have also heard they SUCK!) but I did it anyway!!
You know, blogging is a very cool hobby or business to have. You can post exactly what’s on your mind(within reason). It’s YOUR blog isn’t it? It’s also very cool to see that you have a new reader or your traffic has increased to your blog! There are even advertisers that offer money for blogs that get lots of traffic, so blogging can also make you some moo-lah too! Yay!
Tip #1 | Be yourself
The best blogs are not written using formal grammar rules. You don’t want to think about our 7th grade Language Arts teacher reading your blog and correcting your grammar. Now I am not saying that you should just write anything but honestly, being formal is boring and your readers don’t want to read through a bunch of perfect grammar posts. So if you want your blog to be popular, write it like you are talking to your friends.
Maybe not the “What’s up Dawg?” type, but a normal conversation. You can use slang and other words that may not be “proper” (don’t get nasty, tho). Although I did have one reader tell me that y’all was not a word! (It is in MY book!!) Being funny is also a good way to make people want to keep coming back to read your posts.
Tip #2 | Spell Check
Even though the tone of your blog is casual, edit your work. You can be casual, without being sloppy or rude. Check your spelling before you submit your post. You don’t want posts that are sloppy and full of errors. People will wonder why they should listen to you and probably won’t take anything you say seriously. So remember to SPELL CHECK!
Tip #3 | No Long Posts
Short blog posts will help you keep your readers. Most folks don’t want to spend a ton of time reading blog posts. Stick to your point and keep it short. A blog that is about 400-500 words is more likely to be read. If you have more to write, make another blog post. Give your readers a break.
Tip # 4 | Flexibility
Be flexible with your blog posts. If you have a niche blog, post about different topics in your chosen niche. If you have a lifestyle blog, then there are tons of things you can write about. Just be flexible. Post on everything you are interested in. There are millions of people interested in the same thing. You could even post about popular things in the news, (politics and religion might get you in a blog fight) but current events can bring people to your site when they do a web search! That’s what’s called FREE traffic!
Tip #5 | Advertising Woes
This is a biggie! Too many people only advertise things on their blog and have no real content. Now if you have a review blog, that’s another story, but is a review blog really a blog? Or just advertising space? Advertising is OK but be nice about it. Give great content and if you find something that will help your readers, then by all means, put it on your blog. But not every post and not every page. You don’t want to scare people away!!
Tip # 6 | Last but not least (and MY biggest blogging failure) Consistency!
Folks who read your blog will be looking for a new post every few days. Maybe only once a week. But if you want to keep your blog fresh(and have new subscribers), then you have to post often. Maybe you put new posts up every Saturday. If you do, then be consistent! If you are keeping your blog posts short and sweet (as mentioned above) then you should be able to at least post once a week. 2-3 times is better. I read a blog that has a new post every Tuesday morning, so on Tuesday morning, I go to see what’s new. Now if there wasn’t a new post on Tuesday, I would probably be disappointed because Tuesday morning has been the “new blog post” day for over a year. So, be consistent!
I ‘m checkin the word count here so…..feel free to leave your comments and if you have any more tips or suggestions or want to expand on what I have here, I would love to hear them!
And remember to share, stumble, tweet, digg, facebook, whatever!
God Bless!

I like checklists Lisa, I’ve been doing a few of my own recently.
I agree with all your points especially #3, no long posts. I’ve got used to writing posts of about 250/280 words, which means I can post OFTEN(#6), every 2 days.
However I think these are a bit too short, if I was starting again I would recommend your figure of 400/500 words. The reason being that you can then submit these posts to article directories. 8)
With my current system I have to combine two related posts to make one article.

Hi John,
I can see where 250-280 words might be too short, but 400-500 are good and the reader doesn’t get bored. I have been to blogs and I have to keep scrolling to read the whole thing, so I stop.
Too Much Info!!
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Lisa,
Cool tips
And yeah – people do like lists.
Not that I like tip 3 at all… I can’t manage to keep mine that short…lol
Just as well that I have some loyal readers who can put up with my ramblings…hehe
But then – tip 1 does say to be myself – which is me rambling away… so that’s a little contradictory lol
(Myself rambles for an age – so I can’t do both tips)
….
Sorry – just having a laugh at myself and how many rules I break….. they are all good tips, but there are always execptions to the rule – hence I think tip 1 is more important

I have so many things going on in my brain all the time, that if I rambled, the men in white coats would haul me off!!
I think yall know that when I post on the worlds greatest forum!!
thanks for taking the time!
Talk to ya soon!!

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the tips.
Consistancy isn’t something I’ve managed on my blog
I can easily manage to keep my posts short though.
List are good, because the’re easy to read, and also to write for those of use who have a job to think up what to post
Thanks

Hi Keith,
One more tip….answer the comments on your blog!! I kind of dropped the ball here and hope y’all forgive me!
I sometimes have a hard time thinking up what to post because I have a lot going on in my life, but it’s all good!
Thanks for stopping by!
See ya on the inside!
Lisa~
Once, I also got a problem about consistency. It really took dedication and discipline to keep it up. I never thought blogging could be hard, but the good thing about it are the things I have learned.
A little dissent though, while short post may be ideal, there are times when you need to make it long just to state the point.
Hello Walter!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment. Honestly if I am out blog hopping and I see a long post, I will move on. No matter what the post is about!
Sounds rude, but I have a very limited amount of time to read blog posts(with the kids and all), so I have to get the blogs read as quickly and painlessly as possible!
Now if there are 2 or 3 posts, like a series, I will read all of it!
Just my opinion and again I thank you for stopping by!!
Take care and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
Lisa~
Hi Lisa,
Love the blog post, and thankfully it was not too long, I often get disheartened when I reach a blog and see a big long post, puts me off reading it.
Consistency is so important, I think it’s a great idea to always post on the same day or period, I will be sure and try to follow your tips.
Thank you, Alex

Thanks for stopping by! I have consistency problem too! But…no long posts here! Time constraints.
So…..do you have any real pictures of you? I would love to see one!

Blogging is really cool stuff I enjoy blogging that is the way I can express my thoughts and feelings.
Now is this a real comment or are ya spammin the blog? Are you Ron from Flats to rent or John from Flats to rent?
Hmmm…
Lisa~
Hi Lisa,
I agree with you with the tips you have given, but I agree most with the #1 and #3. I always apply the attitude of being myself in blogging and I always make sure that my blog is not too long for the readers to read. Thanks for sharing!

Lisa:
It amazes me that I continue to publish my post without running spell check first. Come on, when am I going to learn. Luckily I go back and read my post after it is published. This is when I usually find the mistakes and then I immediately go and fix them.
Keeping the posts short is good but if one tends to be long winded then they should break the post down by using bold subheadings or even pictures.
Have fun!

Oh No Rick!! Yew gota rn a spl chck frist!! hahaha!
Where do you get your pics? I always want to add more pictures, but don’t have a clue where to get them!

Hi Lisa
Consistency has been my biggest problem in the past, but I am getting better at it, and I have to agree that being yourself is so important, thats why I dont use other peoples articles which would be easier and quicker, but would not refect my own personality
Have a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year
Nick
Hi Nick!
I need to be more consistent as well, but the timing is challenging.
I need to be more consistent with replying to my blog comments, too!!
You see, I have 6 kids here and I never know what I am gonna come home to, in fact today,I have already made dinner (Baked ham and vegetables) and now I am off to do some laundry, make a dish for a potluck tomorrow and get these kiddos squared away!
Ya think we are ever gonna have more time in the day??
Thanks for stopping by!!
I hope you have a Merry Merry Christmas and a Very happy, Prosperous New Year! 2-0-1-1 is gonna be FUN!!

Hi
Blogging is something I have never really got into in the past, tried a few times but never really kept on top of it.I really enjoyed your post and all your tips and as blogging played a big part in the couching I’m working on I will have to follow them all.
Terry
Hello Terry!

Thanks for stopping by! Sorry it took me a while to get back to ya! busy holidays (I know, it’s no excuse!!)
I love blogging. All of it. The set up, the writing, the reading and commenting.
Blogging gets your name out there for your personal branding so folks know who you are! It is time consuming and getting traffic is another chore, but I have learned so much over the past year, it’s all coming together! AND people are starting to know who I am and what I am all about!
Good thing it’s FUN!!
Hope you have a Happy Happy New Year!!
Thanks!
Lisa~
Hi Lisa, thanks for commenting on my blog.
Your 6 tips are spot on if we want to see the best results possible from our efforts.
Tip 1 is extremely important, if we’re not being ourselves our readers will pick up on it and start to distrust us in the future, if they bother coming back at all
Tip 2 is also important. I use Open Office writer to write my posts as it spell checks as i type, which some may find a pain in the R Send; if so write them in notepad and then copy and paste to writer or word for the spell check.
Tip 3 i’m not to sure about Lisa. I agree that long posts do put people off, but i like to give a complete description/guide in my posts: Some of which are nearly 2,000 words (but only a few)
Tip 4 is a must in my opinion, being flexible means we’ll always be able to create a post of interest. My Niches are eBay and Internet marketing for Newbies which can cover a lot of ground but sometimes other subjects are covered as I like to help newbies in every way and sometime a subject is so hot that i have to bring it to my readers attention or I feel that I am failing them.
Tip 5 you’re bang on I visit quite a few blogs on my rounds Lisa and one of them has been trying auto blogging, which in my opinion is just advertising for clickbank products. I like to leave comments on the blogs i visit but find it very hard when the post is just a sales pitch for a product i have no intention of buying. Now when i see this kind of post i hit the exit button
Tip 6 is extremely important. Some post monthly, bi weekly, weekly, twice weekly etc etc any of are fine as long as you’re regular. I read a comment on a post somewhere that has stuck with me: If you want a low Alexa ranking post regularly (2-3 times weekly) if you want more comments per post then post less regularly. Since the 100 blog comment challenge I have tried to post every week and on occasion twice weekly. As a result of doing this my Alexa ranking has improved and i’m getting a fair number of comments per post.
An additional point Lisa is that if people visit a blog 2 or 3 times over a month or two and see the same post again and again they may not come back for a 4th attempt.
Also like Keith said, Replying to comments: During the 100 blog comment challenge I noticed many people not replying to comments and even some that only replyed to big names. This kind of P’d me off and it looked like the people leaving comments and getting blanked were being taken for granted and i’m all about encouraging newbies and replying to comments is part and parcel of that encouragement. I now feel that if a comment is good enough to approve then it’s good enough to reply to.
Lisa you write terrific posts, keep them coming my friend.
I hope that you had a great Christmas and i wish you and your family a Happy Prosperous New Year.
May you sail the seas of ambition and land on the shores of success.
Respect and Regards, Barry
Now you can see why my posts are so long
Barry Wells recently posted..If You Are New to eBay Try Newbies Auction Profits- FREE
Hello Barry,
I know sometimes posts can be long, it’s really tough to get around that, but long is OK if it’s not all the time! I know I click off long posts, especially boring ones! haha! And how-to posts are OK if they are long, people want to read how to do something they are looking for.
One thing I need to do is to post more often. It’s not that I am being a lazy bum, I am just really short on time and with everything else I have going on, blog hopping, product creation, learning how to make videos and copywriting, I get busy!!
I try to reply to all my comments as well. I won’t approve them if I can’t comment back! I would hate to leave people hanging and not be able to at least say Hi and thanks!!
But, it’s 2011 and this weekend I am going to make my plan for this year…AND stick to it!!
You are truly and inspiration to me! You are doing great and have helped me quite a bit!
Thanks for that and thanks for stopping by!!
Happy Happy New Year!!

Hi Lisa,
Great short list and advice about blogging.
My personal short coming with blogging is creating posts that are too long. I need to find a way to shorten them…no doubt.
Guess I’ll make that one of my resolutions for this year…
making shorter blog posts
So glad we met Lisa…It truly wish for you your most prosperous year ever in 2011.

Hi Lisa,
I must say I like your list and want to comment on a few points.
#2 Spell Check. This is my absolute pet peeve. Even when people leave comments that have mispellings, it drives me nuts. I mean, it’s not THAT hard to spell is it?
#3. I have heard many times that shorter posts do better because of attention span issues, but have you seen ViperChill.com? Glen’s site is awesome and he has a ton of subscribers. His posts are 1,500-3,000 words each. There are many sites that do well with long posts.
I don’t think people should limit what they write based solely on word count. Write what you have to say and if it’s short, fine. If not, fine.

Hello Steve,
I just stopped by your blog and you are really ready to “End the Grind” Goodness! Lots of negative thoughts over there! You have some beautiful girls, hopefully they put a BIG SMILE on your face!
I say long posts are OK if the post is interesting. I like stories, myself. There are just too many people who think writing really long posts are the way to go with the keywords and such, and honestly, a 4-500 word post is ideal for regular blog posting.
That’s not too long, and not too short. And yes, I do go over that amount too!
Take care and God bless!
Thanks for stopping by!
Lisa~
I remember one time telling people to spell check, and I wrote “speel check”. I felt like a complete ass, LOL. Good thing you didn’t do that here eh?
Brandon@Make Money Blogging recently posted..Guest Blogging Contest- Win 50 Ad Banners
Hi Lisa,
I must say that you have pretty much touched the 5 most fundamental points in your 6 tips to a better blog. However, I would also like to add that one should also (must) approach everything you do ‘carefully’.
Fore example. “Be yourself”.
Not all people inherit the same moral standards and values as do others. For such a reason, allowing to be ‘fully’ yourself when you blog – might trigger more blog readers but the blog will never reach a distinguished level where people acclaim the respect for you as they should.
If you approach people in a (for example) informal way at all times (for example by being the person that you are, and writing in the style you talk at home); people might not take you that seriously at all.
Just a thought of mind.
Essential tips though, Lisa.
– Jason Jumat
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the tips.
Jason Jumat mentioned something very important. I believe you must be yourself, but as you said “don’t get nasty”. Maybe you should replace the “Be yourself” part with something like “write like I do” or “write like Lisa do” : o). Seriously, I love the way you wrote this post! It is so informative and entertaining.
Keep up the good work!
Take care,
Mouh
