Discipline and Mush

MORE BLAH!!I am in John Thornhill’s Masterclass and I am supposed to be writing an ebook. I was actually supposed to have that done a while ago!

I have a niche, I have a passion, I know what I want to write, I know what I want to say, I know what I want it to look like so what’s the prob?!?!

I have the website, graphics, table of contents and a thousand ideas in my head of what I want to include in my book.

I just can’t write it.  I start writing and putting ideas on paper and it all just turns into mush.  Mush in my head, mush on paper, ideas are mush…just total, complete, undeniable MUSH!!

Sometimes, I actually just want to say screw it and forget the whole thing! In fact, I did, once. Then I look at how far I have come, how much time and energy I have put into this, what I really want to do with my life(that’s a BIG one!!) and I sit back down and get back to the mush.

Discipline.

Gotta have tons more discipline.

dis•ci•pline

Self-discipline refers to the training that one gives one’s self to accomplish a certain task or to adopt a particular pattern of behavior, even though one would really rather be doing something else (stole this from Wiki)

See that “even though one would really rather be doing something else” part??

That’s me.

We only do what we really want to do. Human nature. Why would someone want to write a bunch of mush when they could be hanging out with the kids(they grow so fast!!) or on Twitter, Skype, reading other peoples blogs or helping a fellow blogger with ideas? That’s a total feel-good deal. YAY!

Writing something that looks like mush that gets your head spinning so fast you just wanna holler STOP!!!? Not so feel-good. BLAH!

I have gobs of self-discipline.  I have to.  Just not on this.

Time management? Got that down. Work all day, write when I can. Less sleep means more time to do. Duh! How hard could that be?

What do you do when you have to do something that is not so feel-good? Curl up in the fetal position and cry for your mama? Eat like there is no tomorrow? Have a little drinky or two (or 10?)??

Or something more productive like making a list of your goals for the day and sticking with it? Or writing out your dreams and aspirations and sticking them on your computer so you can see them everyday and remember why you started this in the first place?? Go for a bike ride? Cook like a chef?

What???

Let me know and I hope y’all have an AMAZING DAY!!! :)

Lisa~

  1. Oftentimes, it is hard to stick to the things we need to do. We always seek doing task we are comfortable with. In my case I do imagine what will I be in the days to come. If I stick to the things that will bring me no benefit I will suffer a blight future, but if I make the sacrifice of endurance and discipline I will enjoy a fruitful tomorrow. It is our choice to what to make of our lives. :-)

  4. Hi Lisa,

I am having the same problem! I call mine ‘Brain Freeze’ but I like your more descriptive word ‘mush’ that is certainly how my brain feels.

Perhaps it is just a phase we are going through, everyone goes through phases don’t they? Toddlers, teenagers, menopausal women, manopausal men. I am sure the phase will pass, we just have to try and stay positive and take each day as it comes.

If you are not feeling passionate about what you are writing about it will be obvious in the content of your book. I am going to challenge myself to write one page a day, it may take me a long time to write the ebook but one page at a time is better than giving up.

Good luck with your ‘mush’ phase, I am sure you/we will get through it, you are such a positive person, anyway you have to, because I want to read your book when you are finished.

    Take care.

  5. Hey Lisa, take a break. Spend some short time away from what is making you nuts and come back to it fresh. If you didn’t believe you can do this, you wouldn’t have started. I bet you also knew there were going to be ups and downs. Take a breather and hit it fresh. The feeling you have happens to all of us. The best to you,

  6. Hey Lisa, Good psot.

You’re right. Discipline is necessary but can be difficult at times. I try to train myself and set-up my environment so that distractions are less accessible. I also have my goals and plans posted right in front of my face at all times.

    Thanks for writing about this!

    Peace,

  9. I curl up in the fetal position and cry. Haha! NOT!

I actually take the time to realize that it’s all about pleasure and pain. The pain of going through something that you don’t want to do, like writing the ebook. This means having to jot down idea, do research, actually think about what I’m going to write, making sure my writing sounds proper, making sure that my facts are straight, putting links in my ebook, blah, blah, blah… All pain! It sucks.

I would rather be doing something pleasurable, like hanging with the wife, going out to lunch with the wife, playing PlayStation, going to the batting cages, playing catch with my son, messing around on the computer, and so on, and so on…

When you look at it this way you may suddenly realize that you have lots and lots of pain associated to writing the ebook or whatever it might be that you’re avoiding.

I think that it’s best to think of all the great things that you’ll get by writing your ebook. You’ll get a sense of accomplishment. You’ll be building your business. You’ll have created something to be proud of. You will actually be an, “author”. You’ll have something to help build your list. You’ll feel good about yourself. You’ll gain momentum in writing ebooks… Etc, etc.

See, aren’t those associations better than thinking of all the negative malarkey?

Anywho, I’m sorry. I got off on a tangent there didn’t I. Well, I hope this helps in the future. I think I’ll go work on my ebook. :)

    All the best,

Hi Ed! Glad you finally stopped by!! Been missing you!
I have been working on my book! YAY! In fact I am going to put a video or 2 in the book and have been diligently learning how to use Camtasia to go just that! I write during my lunch hour (when time and errands permit, which is about 4 times a week!!) and have been plugging along.
I am in need of a good mic for my video. got any ideas??
I got some pain going on!! I want to be at home with my kids! Oh, I guess it’s not really pain, just a little irritated!! ;)

How’s your book coming along? Good I hope!

    Talk to ya soon!!
